If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to travel between the U.S. and Japan, ZIPAIR is an airline you should definitely consider. As a low-cost carrier (LCC) operated by Japan Airlines, ZIPAIR offers non-stop flights at significantly lower prices compared to traditional airlines, making it an attractive option for American travelers.
What is ZIPAIR?
ZIPAIR is a Japan-based low-cost airline that launched in 2020. It is a subsidiary of Japan Airlines (JAL) and focuses on providing affordable international flights while maintaining a high level of service. Unlike many budget airlines, ZIPAIR operates long-haul flights, including routes between the United States and Japan.
ZIPAIR Routes from the U.S
- Los Angeles (LAX) – Tokyo Narita (NRT)
- San Francisco (SFO) – Tokyo Narita (NRT)
- San Jose (SJC) – Tokyo Narita (NRT)
- Honolulu (HNL) – Tokyo Narita (NRT)
- Houston (IAH) – Tokyo Narita ( NRT)
Why Choose ZIPAIR?
Affordable prices
ZIPAIR’s fares are often much cheaper than full-service airlines, allowing budget-conscious travelers to save on airfare. You pay only for what you need, with optional add-ons for meals, baggage, and seat selection.
Comfortable Seating Options
Unlike many budget airlines, ZIPAIR offers fully lie-flat seats in its “ZIP Full-Flat” class, making long-haul flights more comfortable. Economy seats are also designed with ample legroom compared to other low-cost carriers.
Free Wi-Fi
Unlike many budget airlines, ZIPAIR provides complimentary Wi-Fi on all flights, allowing passengers to stay connected throughout their journey.
Things to Consider Before Booking ZIPAIR
No seat back screens
Zipair does not have seatback screens on its flights. Instead, the airline offers free in-flight Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to stream entertainment on their own devices. Since there are no built-in screens, it’s a good idea to bring a tablet, laptop, or smartphone to watch movies, browse the internet, or listen to music. However, due to high demand, the Wi-Fi can sometimes be slow, especially for video streaming. If you want to enjoy uninterrupted entertainment, downloading movies or shows before your flight is recommended.
No Free Meals
Unlike full-service airlines, ZIPAIR does not include meals in the ticket price. You can pre-order meals or bring your own food onboard.
Meal Options on ZIPAIR
In-Flight Purchases: Limited snacks and drinks are available for purchase onboard.
Pre-Order Meals: You can select and purchase meals in advance through the airline’s website. The menu varies but typically includes Japanese and international dishes. If you want a full meal, it’s recommended to pre-order before your flight, as in-flight options can be limited.
Baggage fees
The base fare does not include checked baggage, so if you’re bringing large luggage, factor in the additional cost.
Carry-On Baggage (Free)
- Limit: 2 pieces (1 small personal item + 1 larger carry-on)
- Weight: Combined total must be under 7kg (15.4 lbs)
- Size: Larger carry-on must be within 55cm × 40cm × 25cm (21.6in × 15.7in × 9.8in)
If you exceed the carry-on baggage allowance, you may carry on board up to a total of 15 kg (the allowed weight + 8 kg) with an additional charge to be paid at least 24 hours prior to departure. If the size or number of pieces exceeds the limit, or if the weight exceeds 15 kg, the baggage must be checked in.
It’s not common for airlines to weigh carry-on bags, so many people might not be aware of it. As a result, they may have to open their luggage and adjust the weight at the check-in counter. Since ZIPAIR strictly enforces this policy, be sure to check your carry-on weight in advance.
I will recommend to get a luggage scale.

Checked Baggage (Paid)
ZIPAIR charges for checked baggage based on weight, not the number of bags.
- Weight: up to 30 kg (66lbs)
- Maximum Size: 203cm (80in) total (L+W+H)
- Cost: Varies by route and booking time (cheaper if added online before departure)
Baggage in excess of 30 kg per piece or dimensions over 203 cm (sum of length, width, and height) cannot be checked in, except for certain types of sports equipment.
While most airlines have a 23kg (50lbs) limit, ZIPAIR allows checked bags up to 30kg (66lbs) each. Instead of checking in a small suitcase, it’s more cost-effective to pack as much as possible into a larger suitcase.
My personal experience
Positive Points of ZIPAIR
1. Smooth Check-in Process
The check-in at the airport was very smooth. Despite the strict carry-on luggage checks, everything moved quickly, and we had no issues with the process.
2. Value Package for Added Convenience
We opted for the Value Package, which included checked baggage, seat selection and meals. This ensured that we didn’t have to worry about additional charges, making the experience much more stress-free.
3. Generous Baggage Allowance
With ZIPAIR, you can check in a 30kg bag (66lbs) per person, which is more generous than many other airlines. This allowed us to pack more efficiently without stressing over the weight of our luggage.
4. Free Wi-Fi
ZIPAIR provides free Wi-Fi, which is a nice bonus for passengers looking to stay connected during the flight.
Negative Points of ZIPAIR
1. Tight Seat Space
The economy seats felt a bit cramped, even for someone around my height (5 feet). It may be uncomfortable for passengers who need more legroom.
2. Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues
While the free Wi-Fi is a good feature, it can be unreliable. Once the Wi-Fi becomes available, everyone tries to connect at the same time, leading to disconnections. This makes it difficult to stream videos, and you may need to keep reconnecting.
3. No Seatback Screens
ZIPAIR does not offer in-flight entertainment screens in the seats. This can be inconvenient for passengers who expect entertainment on long flights. However, we managed by downloading videos before the flight.
Summary
Considering the price and convenience, I think I will probably continue to use ZIPAIR in the future. The affordability and straightforward service make it a great option for budget-conscious travelers like us. Despite some minor inconveniences like the narrow seats and Wi-Fi connectivity issues, the overall experience was positive, especially for a long-haul flight. One of ZIPAIR’s significant advantages is its competitive pricing, allowing travelers to customize their experience with optional add-ons. It provides good value for those who are looking for a no-frills, comfortable, and affordable way to travel.
